Motivating Boy Writers
Using audio and visual to engage and motivate
Target Audience: 1st to 8th Grade Teachers and Students, Parents, Administrators and Consultants.
Session Duration: 45 minutes to 2.0 hours
Research has confirmed and classroom practice has demonstrated that by building relationships and using audio-visual media with boy writers, teachers can motivate, engage and support boys during the writing process. Strategies include the use of laptops, microphones, headsets, audio and video recording software.
Digital, non-fiction subject integrated writing samples from 1st grade to 8th grade will be showcased.
Digital Storytelling - Overview
An overview of how to write a compelling, heartfelt non-fiction narrative as a digital story.
Target Audience: 4th to 12th grade students, Teachers, Parents.
Session Duration: 45 minutes to 1.5 hours
During this session you’ll be introduced to the original digital storytelling concept and process. After writing a compelling personal, non-fiction narrative, digital storytellers combine digital still images and the writers recorded narrative to produce a powerful visual story. The creators of digital stories have lasting, meaningful digital artifacts that will be cherished for years to come.
Illustrative samples during the session will include digital stories created by students and adults.
Digital Storytelling - Full Day Hands On
Writing and recording compelling personal narratives that tell a heartfelt story.
Target Audience: 4th to 12th grade students, Teachers, Parents.
Session Duration: Full Day Session
During this day long session you’ll be introduced to the art of digital storytelling then you will spend the day creating your own digital story.
We'll spend the morning writing a compelling personal, non-fiction narrative on a topic of your choice.
As a digital storyteller you will combine digital still images and your recorded narrative to produce a powerful visual story.
As the creator of your own digital story you will have a lasting, meaningful digital artifact which will be cherished for years to come.
Illustrative samples during the session will include digital stories created by adults and students.
The process for implementing a digital storytelling workshop with your students will be explained.
Participants are asked to bring along digital still images which will be used to create your digital story.
Filmmaking 101
Creating Public Service Announcements
Target Audience: Middle School Teachers and Students, Parents, Administrators and Consultants.
Session Duration: 1 to 1.5 hours
Learn how to deconstruct and construct 30 to 90 second public service announcement films.
Establish the topic and vision statement, assign the 7 key creative roles. Then brainstorm, script, storyboard, film and edit.
Scripts and storyboards as well as visual tutorials will be used to show you how to create powerful short films that tell a story and have a message targeted towards the greater good.

Session Duration: 1 to 1.5 hours
As classroom technology use continues to evolve, teachers are interested in ways to use audio and video in their lesson plans, presentations and on their blogs and podcasts.
This session will provide the “how to” on working with various kinds of audio and video formats.
Methods of audio and video recording and capture, reformatting, file compression, file format types, RSS feeds and publishing, software and hardware needs and storage will be covered.
Subject and topic specific examples will be used as well as more general use examples.
Media Literacy
Expectation 3.4 - Producing Media Texts
Target Audience: 1st to 8th Grade Teachers and Students, Parents, Administrators and Consultants.
Session Duration: 45 minutes to 2.0 hours
Producing media texts in the classroom, which can include technology integrations like audio and visual recording, can be challenging at the best of times. In this session you will learn how expectation 3.2 of the media literacy curriculum is used in planning for the production part of media literacy in classroom programmes.
Examples of media texts from 1st grade to 8th grade will be showcased.
